Define the question screening can answer
XRF provides elemental information quickly and can help receiving inspection prioritize follow-up work. An elemental concentration does not automatically establish the concentration of a particular restricted compound. The official description of IEC 62321-3-1:2026 continues to identify the method as screening and includes additional indicator elements. When adopting the revised method, check the applicable materials and assumptions individually; a software “pass” cannot resolve every substance-level question.
Separate elements, substances and sample levels
Total chromium and hexavalent chromium are different measurands, as are total bromine and particular brominated flame retardants. Elemental findings can guide investigation, while confirmation of a specific substance requires an appropriate method. Sample definition also matters. Measuring housings, solder joints, coatings and connectors together can average out a locally elevated concentration or allow a substrate to influence a thin-layer result. Record the component, material and measurement location before deciding whether to disassemble, prepare or refer a sample to a laboratory.
Define what happens to uncertain results
We recommend documenting three routes: samples meeting validated screening rules proceed under the agreed procedure; borderline or interference-affected samples receive repeat measurement, additional preparation or laboratory testing; clearly abnormal batches are held and traced. Decision boundaries should follow the applicable requirements and method validation, rather than one universal instrument reading across different materials. A non-detect also needs to be considered against detection capability under the measurement conditions; it does not mean that a substance is absent.
Keep records that can be reviewed
A practical record links the sample photograph, measurement location, material class, analytical mode, measurement duration, original spectrum and follow-up decision to one identifier. These details are more useful in a supplier dispute than an isolated result screenshot. Validate the effect of changes to films, sample thickness or calibration procedures before revising the work instruction.
The value of screening lies in identifying material that needs confirmation and preserving the basis for each decision. A final conformity declaration also depends on the applicable regulatory scope, material declarations, relevant testing and complete technical documentation.
